Dr. Annette Kim installed as the Henry Clay Bryant Professor in Pathology

Congratulations on the investiture of Annette Kim, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Pathology, and Director of the Division of Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics, with the Henry Clay Bryant Professorship in Pathology. This professorship was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Bryant, who received his medical degree and completed his pathology residency at the University of Michigan.

Pathology Informatics Summit

The University of Michigan Department of Pathology was honored to serve as co-host of this year’s Association of Pathology Informatics Summit, held at Eagle Crest Resort in Ypsilanti, Michigan, May 20-23, 2024. Director of Pathology Informatics Dr. Ulysses Balis served as this year’s conference director, along with Henry Ford Health System’s Dr. Mark Tuthill, who served as co-chair, with incredible support provided by U-M's Beth Gibson, conference manager and CME coordinator, and the U-M Pathology Informatics team who dedicated hundreds of hours toward the planning of this meeting. This year’s Summit enjoyed an exuberant turnout, with nearly 400 in attendance.

13th Annual Advances in Forensic Pathology

The 13th Annual Advances in Forensic Pathology Conference was held on May 16-17, 2024, at Weber’s Inn in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Hosted by the University of Michigan Department of Pathology, the well-attended conference packed the conference room with medical examiners, coroners, law enforcement, forensic pathologists, pathology assistants, forensic residents and fellows, and others.

Large Study Identifies Biomarkers for Rare Kidney Tumors

With 20 subtypes of Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) listed by the World Health Organization in 2022, determining the specific type of RCC and the correct treatment protocol for patients can be daunting. Only seven of the 20 subtypes had been defined by specific molecular changes and the 20% of RCCs that are classified as non-clear cell RCCs (non-ccRCC), were primarily identified only by histopathologic features.

Successful 15th Annual New Frontiers in Pathology Held at The Graduate

The weather was unseasonably warm as pathologists and trainees gathered at The Graduate Hotel in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the 15th Annual New Frontiers in Pathology Conference on October 26-28. For two and a half days, attendees heard 20 case presentations by a variety of Michigan Medicine Pathology specialists and participated in break-out sessions for deeper dives into selected subspecialties.

Bold Changes: The Succession of Jeffrey Myers, M.D.

After 12 years of service as the MLabs Medical Director, Jeffrey Myers, M.D., will be focusing on his role as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Quality in the Department of Pathology and ushering in his MLabs successor, the current MLabs Associate Medical Director, Julia Dahl, M.D.

Pathology Welcomes New CDA: Ms. Brooklyn Khoury, MBA, MHSA, MS

The Department of Pathology is pleased to announce Brooklyn Khoury, MBA, MHSA, MS as the new Chief Department Administrator (CDA), effective Monday, June 19, 2023. Ms. Khoury was identified as a top candidate after a comprehensive national search. Khoury will partner with our Department Chair, Dr. Charles Parkos, to manage operations and accomplish strategic initiatives across all our missions. 

A Passion for Helping Others Leads to a Career in Pathology

Born and raised in Northeast China, Dr. Xinna Li, Assistant Research Scientist in the Department of Pathology, has always been passionate about helping others. Her journey began with a childhood fascination with medicine. “I remember as a very young child, bandaging a cut on my brother’s leg. Then, as a teen, my cousin became very ill and I observed how medical treatment could cure illnesses. That is when I realized that I wanted to be a doctor,” recounted Li. Driven by the desire to make a difference, she pursued a medical degree in pediatric hematology from China Medical graduating in 1994.
