Every year Hour Magazine publishes its list of Detroit's top doctors. This year, the Department of Pathology’s Dr. Rohit Mehra was one of 1,000 recognized physicians in 96 specialties, with only six pathologists named.
“It is very humbling and indeed a great privilege to receive this award,” said Mehra. “I am very thankful to my family, mentors, colleagues, collaborators, and our phenomenal team at the University of Michigan."
Dr. Mehra began his medical career in India before coming to the University of Michigan to be a research fellow under Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan and complete his residency training in Anatomic Pathology. In 2012, Mehra joined the pathology department as a faculty member where he now serves as a professor of pathology, is a member of the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology (MCTP), and is the director of the Genitourinary service line for MLabs and Michigan Legacy Tissue Program.
"Dr. Rohit Mehra's exceptional expertise as a pathologist with a focus on prostate and kidney cancer has earned him well-deserved recognition in Hour Magazine's Detroit's Top Doctors,” said Arul Chinnaiyan, Director of MCTP. “His dedication to the field of pathology and his commitment to providing accurate diagnostic insights have made him an invaluable asset to our medical community. Dr. Mehra's inclusion on this prestigious list underscores his unwavering commitment to advancing patient care in the State of Michigan and beyond."
In his research, Mehra focuses on the discovery of gene aberrations in genitourinary tumors and the development of related biomarkers. He has played an important role in research related to mutations in prostate cancer and most recently released a study through a partnership with the Rogel Cancer Center, the Department of Pathology, and the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology that focuses on the MiTF family genes TFE3 and TFEB in renal tumors with morphologic and biomarker alterations considered suspicious for MiTF family genetic mutations.
Mehra states “Above all, we are indebted to our patients and their selfless contribution to further the cause of medicine and advance cutting-edge cancer research.”
Congratulations to Dr. Mehra, and award winners from other departments in Michigan - Drs. Ghassan Allo, Dhananjay Chitale, Alex Green, Said Hafez Khayyata, and Christian Keller.
