The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and local health departments are investigating a recent increase in cyclosporiasis cases, primarily affecting Southeast Michigan counties along the Ohio border. Cyclosporiasis cases typically increase during the summer months; however, the current increase is above expected seasonal incidence. Investigations are underway to identify a potential common exposure or source.
MDHHS recommends testing for cyclosporiasis if suspected. The preferred diagnostic test for cyclosporiasis is the Mid Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel which has a faster turnaround time and greater sensitivity than the Ova and Parasites, Stool (OPE) or Cystoisopora (Isospora) Exam (OPC). The Mid Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel (order code MIDGI) requires stool submitted in Stool Culture (Cary-Blair) transport (orange top container):
Collection Instructions: Collect fresh random stool specimen. Transfer fresh stool specimen to Cary Blair transport within 2 hours of collection if held at room temp or within 24 hours if held refrigerated. Fill transport until liquid reaches fill line. Emulsify specimen thoroughly in transport fluid. If necessary, place a urine bag on the patient to prevent urine contamination. Acceptable specimens are stool sent in Stool Culture transport (orange cap - Cary Blair) stored at room temperature or refrigerated for up to 4 days. If an unacceptable specimen is received, the client will be notified before disposal of the original specimen.
The recommended test is a highly specialized diagnostic assay, which is covered by many, but not all insurance plans. Please contact 855-855-0863 for clarity on the price of the recommended test and ask for pricing for the Mid Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel, order code MIDGI and CPT code 87506. Michigan residents may benefit from use of the MSupport program, which provides discounts or completely free care for qualifying patients with low incomes, high out-of-pocket costs, or specialized medical needs. Patients can also negotiate reduced settlement amounts or set up structured payment plans directly with the billing.
