Ionized Calcium requires a dedicated specimen effective July 5, 2025. MLabs specimen labels have been updated to include the text “REQUIRES SEPARATE TUBE”. This change was implemented as part of a quality assurance initiative to reduce specimen handling errors and address an important patient safety concern.
Collection Instructions: Collect specimen in SST (preferred) or green top tube. Do not aliquot serum or remove the stopper for any reason. Centrifuge and refrigerate intact specimen. Because this analyte is sensitive to air exposure and pH changes, specimens sent for Ionized Calcium require a dedicated sample and cannot be shared for other tests ordered and add-on requests cannot be accepted for samples sent for other testing.
