Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect 24 hour urine in a clean, plastic container with no metal cap or glued insert and no preservative. Aliquot urine into a clean, plastic container with no metal cap or glued insert and refrigerate within 4 hours of completion of collection. Record 24 hour urine volume and collection dates/times on the request form. Collection must take place prior to, or 96 hours after administering barium-containing contrast media.

Special Handling

Patient Preparation: High concentrations of barium are known to interfere with this test. If barium-containing contrast media has been administered, the specimen should not be collected for at least 96 hours.

Contraindications
Do not collect specimens from patients who have received gadolinium within the past 48 hours. Gadolinium, a material contained in some contrast media, is known to interfere with most metals tests.

Refrigerated is preferred, ambient and frozen are acceptable
