Testing must be approved by the health department prior to ordering. Providers should contact the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health at 517-335-8165 to request Zika virus testing for Michigan residents. All specimens must be accompanied by a Michigan Zika Supplemental Questionnaire available at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdhhs/MichiganZikaSupplementalQuestio….
Collect specimen in a red top tube; do not use SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial within 4 hours of collection, and refrigerate. Urine, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) and amniotic fluid specimens will be accepted for Zika PCR testing ONLY if they are accompanied by serum specimens.
Test sent to Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS); although there is no charge for testing, MLabs charges a handling fee for processing and forwarding specimens to MDHSS.
