Test Overview
Gas Chromatography (GC)
Evaluate methanol and isopropanol toxicity, alcohol (ethanol) drug abuse, and ethylene glycol toxicity. Acetone is a metabolite of isopropanol and may be elevated in cases of acute isopropanol ingestion. In diabetic ketoacidosis acetone can also be found in serum concentrations up to 70 mg/dL.
Normal Ranges: None present
Toxic ranges:
Ethanol > 450 mg/dL
Isopropanol > 340 mg/dL
Methanol > 20 mg/dL
Acetone > 20 mg/dL
Ethylene Glycol > 30 mg/dL
* Reference ranges may change over time. Please refer to the original patient report when evaluating results.

STAT requests for this test will be performed on a STAT basis (supervisory staff approval is not required).
Specimen Requirements
Collect blood in green top tube. Do not remove stopper from collection tube. Refrigerate and send intact specimen. Gray top (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate), Red top, SST top, or Lavender top tubes are also acceptable. Other specimen types: Collect or place in clean plastic container, close tightly, and refrigerate. Assay can be performed on whole blood, serum, plasma, gastric washings, or vitreous humor.
Additional Information
Test includes quantitation of Ethanol, Methanol, Isopropanol, Ethylene Glycol, and Acetone. For ethanol level only, see Ethanol.
