Assessment of thiamin deficiency. Thiamin measurement is appropriate in patients with behavioral changes, eye signs, gait disturbances, delirium, and encephalopathy; or in patients with questionable nutritional status, especially those who appear at risk and who also are being given insulin for hyperglycemia.

Specimen Requirements
Collect specimen in a lavender top tube (EDTA) following an overnight (12 hour) fast. Invert 8-10 times to mix blood, pour whole blood into an plastic vial, and freeze. Protect specimen from light.DO NOT SPIN
Fasting specimen. Protect specimen from light. Aliquot (pour) whole blood to amber PFL tube before freezing.DO NOT SPIN
Specimen received as plasma at Mayo. DO NOT SPIN
