Test Overview
Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Useful for the detection of Varicella zoster encephalitis.
Varicella zoster virus DNA Not detected.
* Reference ranges may change over time. Please refer to the original patient report when evaluating results.
The results of this test should be correlated with serologic tests, patient symptoms, and clinical presentation. A single assay should not be the only criteria used to form a clinical conclusion.
Test Details

Specimen Requirements
CSF can be stored at 2-8 C for 7 days post collection or at or below -70 C if longer than 7 days (freeze within 3 days).
CSF should be tested STAT, but may be stored at 2-8 C for 7 days post collection or at or below -70 C if longer than 7 days (freeze within 3 days).
Additional Information
The Varicella zoster PCR use the polymerase chain reaction to amplify Varicella zoster virus specific DNA sequences directly from the patient's CSF. Results should be used in conjunction with other laboratory test results and the patient's clinical profile.
