Immunofluorescence (IFA)

Test Usage

Diagnosis of CNS infection with rubeola (measles) virus and/or SSPE.

Reference Range *

IgG: <1:5, IgM: <1:10. The presence of IgM class antibodies or a 4-fold or greater rise in paired sera IgG titer indicates recent infection. The presence of demonstrable IgG generally indicates past exposure and immunity.

Collection Instructions

Collect specimen in sterile tube or container. Send specimen frozen in a screw-capped plastic vial. CSF must be accompanied by a serum specimen collected at the same time (0.5 mL serum, refrigerated).

Additional Information

Test sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories. The serum specimen is used to aid interpretation of spinal fluid results. There is an additional charge for the serum assay (Mayo test # 84423, CPT 86765 x2).
