Collection Instructions

Pyruvate specimens cannot be drawn at off-site blood draw stations. Onsite Michigan Medicine blood draw stations may obtain pyruvate tubes containing 4 mL of chilled 8% perchloric acid from the chemical pathology laboratory; keep tubes refrigerated until use. Collect and process blood sample according to procedure listed on instruction sheet accompanying collection tubes. Transport specimen to the laboratory IMMEDIATELY following collection. Do not transport Pyruvic Acid specimens via the pneumatic tube system.

Special Handling

Place on ice immediately and deliver to lab within 15 minutes or process according to Offsite Collection below.

Alternate Specimen
CSF samples are acceptable. 1mL minimum required. Place in sterile tube or container; Do NOT collect in 8% perchloric acid. (11/98)
