High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Fluorometric Detection
This test is preferred test during symptomatic periods for acute intermittent porphyria, hereditary coproporphyria, and variegate porphyria. The random urine collection for this test allows for the diagnosis to be established and treatment to be initiated quickly.
UROPORPHYRINS, OCTA: < or =30 nmol/L
HEPTACARBOXYLPORPHYRINS: < or =7 nmol/L
HEXACARBOXYLPORPHYRINS: < or =2 nmol/L
PENTACARBOXYLPORPHYRINS: < or =5 nmol/L
COPROPORPHYRINS, TETRA: < or =110 nmol/L
PORPHOBILINOGEN: < or =1.3 mcmol/L

Specimen Requirements
Collect specimen in a clean container (wrap in foil if cannot be transferred to amber bottle in a short period of time). Transfer to an amber bottle to protect the specimen from light as soon as possible. Send urine to Specimen Processing frozen.
Protect from light and strict frozen. Patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours before collection
