Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect 24 hour urine specimen. Add 5 grams of Sodium Carbonate (1 gram for pediatric patients) to container prior to start of collection; do not use Sodium Bicarbonate. Aliquot 50 mL into a plastic urine container and refrigerate. Protect specimen from light. Record total 24 hour urine volume and collection dates/times on request form. Random urine also acceptable; random urine collection does not require preservative.

Special Handling

Protect specimen from light.

Normal Volume
50 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine collection or 20 mL aliquot of random urine collection.
Minimum Volume
30 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine collection or 20 mL aliquot of random urine collection.
Additional Information

Patient should avoid alcohol and excessive fluid intake. Samples that are positive on the screen should be sent out for quantitation. 24 hour urine collection is required for quantitation.
