Test Overview
Test Methodology

GEM 5000- ion-selevtive electrode, amperometric electrode, electrical conductivity, and optical absorbance

Test Usage

Determination of blood gases (pH, pCO2,PO2,SO2,HCO3), sodium, potassium, chloride, ionized calcium, glucose, lactate, hematocrit, and CO-Oximetry to aid in the diagnosis of a patient's acid/base status, electrolyte and metabolite balance, and oxygen delivery capacity

Reference Range *

Analyte specific reference ranges are available the GEM 5000 test procedure located on the POC website: https://www.pathology.med.umich.edu/point-of-care

Reference ranges may change over time. Please refer to the original patient report when evaluating results.

Collection Instructions

Collect in heparinized syringe.

Special Handling

Samples must be tested within 15 minutes of draw time and within 5 minutes if measuring lactate. Expel air bubbles and thoroughly mix syringe samples for >30 seconds by repeatedly inverting and rolling syringe immediately after sample collection. Sample syringe must be capped to seal out air until sample is analyzed in order to maintain accurate pH and blood gas values (pO2, pCO2, O2Hgb).

Normal Volume
3 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume
150 µL whole blood
Rejection Criteria
Specimens; older than 15 minutes, containing bubbles, having prolonged exposure to room air, and/or grossly hemolyzed.
