Test Usage

Suspected hereditary spherocytic hemolytic anemia.

Reference Range *

> or =12 months: 0.50 g/dL NaCl (unincubated): 3-53% hemolysis; 0.60 g/dL NaCl (incubated): 14-74% hemolysis; 0.65 g/dL NaCl (incubated): 4-40% hemolysis; 0.75 g/dL NaCl (incubated): 1-11% hemolysis. Reference values have not been established for patients who are <12 months of age.

Specimen Requirements
Collection

Specimens must be received by performing laboratory within 72 hours of collection. Collect specimen in a lavender top tube. Also collect a normal control specimen in a lavender top tube from an unrelated, non-smoking individual at the same time that the patient is drawn (label "normal control"). Refrigerate both intact specimens; do not transfer blood to other tubes.
