MDHHS Newborn Screening tests for over fifty disorders including Amino Acid Disorders, Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders, Organic Acid Disorders, Endocrine Disorders, Enzyme Disorders, and Hemoglobinopathies.

Test Limitations

This test is intended for newborns. Infants over the age of one will be rejected as too old to test.

    Following phlebotomy collection procedure, ensure the specimen is free from clotting, layering and excess serum contamination. Allow to dry flat in an area free from drafts for 4 hours. Place specimen in a biohazard bag for transport to Specimen Processing

    Special Handling

    A repeat specimen can be collected >28 hrs post transfusion. (9/11/25)

    Test sent to the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS); although there is no charge for testing, MLabs charges a handling fee for processing and forwarding specimens to MDHHS. MDHHS will notify the ordering clinician of abnormal results.
