Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) Assay

Test Usage

Establishing the diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and related disorders (e.g., relapsing transverse myelitis or relapsing optic neuritis) and distinguishing these disorders from multiple sclerosis early in the course of the disease.

Test Limitations

A negative result does not exclude a diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Serum is generally more sensitive than cerebrospinal fluid for detection of neuromyelitis optica (NMO)/aquaporin-4(AQP4)-IgG (NMO-IgG/AQP4-IgG.

Collection Instructions

Collect CSF specimen and refrigerate. Include relevant clinical information as well as ordering physician name, telephone number, and mailing address.

Additional Information

If results require further evaluation, Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) / Aquaporin-4-IgG, CSF, Titer will be performed at an additional charge. By ordering this test the clinician acknowledges that additional reflex testing will be performed and billed at a separate additional charge if indicated. Test sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories.
