Test Usage

Diagnosing multiple sclerosis, especially helpful in patients with equivocal clinical or radiological findings

Kapp Free Light Chains: Medical decision point: 0.1000 mg/dL
Oligoclonal bands: <2 bands

Specimen Requirements
Collection

Collect serum in an SST or red top tube. Spin and aliquot within 2 hours of collection, into a screw capped plastic tube. Label the aliquot as serum. Send to Specimen Processing frozen.
Collect CSF in a screw capped plastic tube. Label as CSF, and send to Specimen Processing frozen.

Special Handling

Serum and CSF must be collected within 7 days of each other

Serum: 1 mL; CSF: 1 mL
Minimum Volume
Serum: 0.5 mL; CSF: 0.5 mL
Storage Temperature
Frozen preferred; Refrigerated- CSF only good 72 hours, serum is 14 days
Additional Information

Kappa free light chain will be performed by nephelometry on all samples. When kappa free light chain results are 0.0600 mg/dL or more, the oligoclonal banding tests will be performed at an additional charge. By ordering this test the clinician acknowledges that additional reflex testing will be performed and billed at a separate additional charge if indicated. Test performed by Mayo Clinic Laboratories
