Test Usage

Predicting fetal lung maturity and assessing the risk of developing neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, when performed during 32 to 39 weeks gestation.

Reference Range *

Immature: <15,000/mcL; Indeterminate: 15,000 - 50,000/mcL; Mature: >50,000/mcL.

Specimen Requirements
Collection

Collect amniotic fluid and refrigerate. Avoid contamination of the amniotic fluid with blood, meconium, or maternal urine. If possible, send specimen immediately. Do not centrifuge sample. Note that an additional 10 mL of amniotic fluid are needed if the FLM results indicate that the lung is immature and the clinician wishes to add the L/S Ratio.

Contraindications
Fetal lung maturity testing is not indicated beyond week 39.

Samples with visible blood contamination cannot be used.
