Microbial cell–free DNA sequencing

Test Usage

Useful for detecting microbial cell–free DNA (mcfDNA) circulating in the bloodstream from more than 1000 pathogens that cause infections.

Specimen Requirements
Collection

Collect specimen in kit obtained from sendouts. Return specimen to Specimen Processing, where it will be held pending approval from Micro on call provider. Micro on call provider will place the order in the Karius portal, and email the requisition to the PATH-Sendout-Group.
If there are no kits available, an EDTA lav top tube is an acceptable alternative. Spin and aliquot plasma within 24 hours. Can be held ambient if sending to Karius <96 hours. Freeze plasma if >96 hours until Karius receives it.

Special Handling

If specimen will not reach Karius within 96 hours, spin within 6 hours of collection and freeze sample in PPT tube.
EDTA Lav top tube is an alternate tube- needs to be spun and aliquotted within 24 hrs of collection. If it will not reach Karius within 96 hrs, then freeze EDTA plasma.

Alternate Specimen
EDTA lavender top tube (must be spun and aliquoted into a sterile polypropylene tube). If it will be received by Karius in less than 96 hours it can be shipped ambient. >96 hours, plasma should be frozen for shipment

Karius prefers First overnight shipping and provides the airbill. They DO accept Saturday delivery.
