Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Test Usage

Detection of herpes simplex virus from neonatal surface swab specimens. If either the culture or PCR result are positive, please consult Pediatric Infectious Diseases for guidance on management.

Reference Range *

Negative for HSV1 DNA and HSV2 DNA

Collection

Swab the conjunctivae, mouth , nasopharynx and anus (in that order). Place swab into M4-RT transport medium (preferred). M4, M5, M6, UVT, and UTM media are also acceptable. Eswab transport is not acceptable. Refrigerate.

Alternate Specimen
M4, M5, M6, UVT, and UTM media are also acceptable.
Contraindications
This test should only be ordered on neonates less than 3 days old. For a surface swab from an infant greater than 3 days old, order “HSV DNA by PCR, Qualitative, Swab” and choose “infant surface swab” as the source. For a visible lesion at any age, order “HSV DNA by PCR, Qualitative, Swab” and indicate the site of the lesion.

Rejection Criteria
Eswab transport is not acceptable. BD ProbeTec transport is not acceptable. Do not use swabs with calcium alginate tip or wooden shafts.
