Phenotype: PCR amplification and viral culture; Genotype: PCR and DNA sequencing

Test Usage

Review the level of susceptibility or resistance that a person has to each antiretroviral drug in order to design an individualized treatment plan. PhenoSense GT® also includes a measure of replication capacity (RC), sometimes called viral fitness, and HIV-1 subtype.

Results of viral load must be greater than or equal to 500 copies/mL.

Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect specimens in sufficient lavender top tubes. Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection at 1000-1200 x g at room temperature for 10-15 minutes. Do not allow samples to remain in centrifuge after centrifugation. Remove plasma from cells immediately and transfer to a plastic screw cap tube. Freeze immediately.

Special Handling

Specimen must be spun, aliquoted and frozen with 2 hours of collection.
