Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) followed by gene sequencing.
Mutations in specific codons of the CMV UL97 gene are associated with resistance to ganciclovir while mutations in specific codons of the CMV UL54 gene are associated with resistance to maribavir, ganciclovir, foscarnet and/or cidofovir. Mutations can consist of changes in codons encoding the amino acids as well as deletions of nucleotides.

Specimen Requirements
Collect specimen in a lavender top tube. Centrifuge, aliquot plasma into a plastic vial or send intact whole blood specimen. Store and transport specimens at room temperature.
