Test Usage

Evaluate presence of hyperlipidemia, metabolic disorders, risk for coronary disease.

Reference Range *

< or = 200 mg/dL.

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines for serum Cholesterol (ATP III Classification):
ADULTS: Desirable <200 mg/dL
Borderline High 200 - 239 mg/dL
High >240 mg/dL.

CHILDREN (ages 0-18 yrs): Desirable <170 mg/dL
Borderline High 170 - 199 mg/dL
High >200 mg/dL.

    Specimen Requirements
    Collection Instructions

    Collect specimen in an SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate for up to 2 days at 2-8C. For long term storage, freeze at -20C.

    Alternate Specimen

    Red top or Green top (sodium or lithium heparin) tube.

    Normal Volume

    0.5 mL serum

    Minimum Volume

    0.25 mL serum
