Test Usage

Electrolyte balance.

Reference Range *

0-1 year: 100 - 113 mmol/L; 1-150 years: 98 - 108 mmol/L.

Serum/plasma chloride values less than 90 mmol/L and greater than 120 mmol/L in infants 0-3 months of age are considered critical.
Values less than 80 mmol/L and greater than 1130 mmol/L in patients 4 months - 150 years of age are considered critical.

Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect specimen in an SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate at 2-8C up to 7 days. For long term storage freeze at -20 up to 30 days.

Alternate Specimen

Red top or Green top (sodium or lithium heparin) tube. [rev 11/09]
