Detection of nutritional deficiency as in anorexia nervosa or of excess of carotene as with food faddists; evidence of person with lipid malabsorption.

Collection Instructions

Collect blood in a red top or SST tube from a fasting patient (12 hour fast). Patient should not consume any alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection of specimen. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into plastic vial and freeze within 1 hour of collection. Protect specimen from light.

Special Handling

Fasting specimen. Protect specimen from light. Must arrive in lab or aliquot and freeze within 1 hour.

Normal Volume

2.0 mL fasting serum

Minimum Volume

1.5 mL fasting serum
