Reference Range *

The concentration of carbamazepine epoxide is normally 10-40% that of the parent drug, but can be variable. During combination therapy the relative concentration of carbamazepine epoxide to carbamazepine may increase slightly.

Collect blood in a red top tube; do not use SST. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate.

Alternate Specimen
Heparinized (green top) or EDTA (lavender top) plasma acceptable.
Rejection Criteria
SST tube not acceptable.
