    Random and 24 hour urine collections are acceptable.
    Preferred specimen collection is in a plain container (NO preservatives).

    Collect a timed 24-hour urine sample. Instruct the patient to void at 8:00am and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24 hour collection period, i.e., 8:00am the next morning. Refrigerate at 2-8C during and after collection. Container MUST be labeled with date and time collection started and finished. Screw the lid on securely, transport the specimen promptly to the laboratory. Any test requiring a 24 hr urine collection with no preservative may also be run on this specimen.

    Alternate Specimen

    Specimens collected with glacial acetic acid or HCl preservative are acceptable. If collected in container with acid preservative, indicate on container and requisition: "Collected in Acid".

    Normal Volume

    5 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine collection or 2 mL aliquot of random urine collection.

    Minimum Volume

    2 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine collection or 1 mL aliquot of random urine collection.

    Rejection Criteria
    Specimens collected with Boric Acid preservative are not acceptable. Diapers, sections of diapers, swabs or any other absorbent material will not be accepted as a collection container for urine.
