Colorimetric (Vanadate Oxidation)

Test Usage

Liver function test useful in the diagnosis of jaundice due to liver disease, hemolytic anemia, and ABO/Rh incompatability.

Reference Range *

DIRECT BILIRUBIN: < 0.3 mg/dL. TOTAL BILIRUBIN: 1-11 years: 0.2 - 1.0 mg/dL; 12-150 years: 0.2 - 1.2 mg/dL

Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect specimen in an SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate. Protect specimen from light (place in brown plastic bag or aliquot into brown tube). See Neonatal Bilirubin handbook entry for neonates (<1 year old): Neonatal Bilirubin, Fractions (NBILI) instead of Total Bilirubin (TBIL) is recommended for neonates < 14 days old.

Protect specimen from light.

Alternate Specimen

Red top or Green top (sodium or lithium heparin) tube. [rev 11/09]

Normal Volume

0.5 mL serum

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL serum

Additional Information

Test includes direct bilirubin, total bilirubin, and indirect bilirubin (calculated).
Testing for neonates (NDBIL, NIBIL, NTBIL) less than 1 yr old will be performed on the diazo-based method. see order group NBILI for patients less than 1 yr old.
