Test Usage

To support a diagnosis of active sarcoidosis. Prognostic indicator, and for titration of steroid therapy in sarcoidosis. (DeRemee and Rohrbach, Annals of Internal Medicine 92:361-335, 1980).

Test Limitations

Elevations have also been reported in the following: Gaucher's disease, leprosy, berylliosis, Lennert's lymphoma, osteoarthritis, and mycobacterium intracellulare infections. (Lieberman, et al., 'American Review of Respiratory Disease,' 120:329-335, 1979). Treatment of hypertension with converting enzyme inhibitors has been shown to lower serum ACE levels.

Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect specimen in SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into plastic vial and refrigerate; do not freeze. Test should not be ordered following administration of radioisotopes. Avoid hemolysis during collection.

Red or green top tube.

1 mL serum
Minimum Volume
0.5 mL serum
Additional Information

Freezing of specimen may cause formation of immune complexes, turbidity, or falsely elevated results. Hemolysis (serum free hemoglobin >150 mg/dL) and bilirubin levels >14 mg/dL will interfere with assay results.
