Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

The preferred specimen for Acanthamoeba PCR from an ocular source is corneal scraping or biopsy. Fluorescein dye may interfere with testing and should not be used prior to collection. Submit only one of the following specimens: 1) fresh ocular tissue, ocular or corneal scrapings, or contact lenses in a sterile container with 1 mL of sterile saline, minimal essential media (MEM), or viral transport media 2) contact lens solution in a sterile container, 3) formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) ocular tissue in a sterile container. Refrigerate.

Alternate Specimen
Other specimens: FFPE ocular tissue, scrapings on a swab, contact lenses, contact lens case without the contacts
Normal Volume
1 mL fluid or 5-10 mm tissue, corneal scrapings is the preferred tissue for this test, in sterile saline solution or VTM
