Effective September 10, 2024, the MLabs Clinical Microbiology Laboratory will begin offering a real time transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) assay for the detection of ribosomal RNA targets associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), candida vaginitis (CV) and trichomoniasis (TV). This assay is intended for use with clinician-collected and patient self-collected vaginal swab specimens from females with a clinical presentation consistent with vaginitis or vaginosis. An extensive verification study of this assay performed by this lab and recent large-scale studies found in the literature suggest that amplified molecular assays should improve the diagnosis of BV, CV and TV over more subjective traditional diagnostic tools such as the Amsel clinical criteria, Nugent-scored Gram stains and culture from vaginal swabs.

In addition to the four new vaginosis tests the laboratory has added two new STI test options for Chlamydia, GC and Mycoplasma genitalium (MGEN) for clinic collected and patient self-collected specimens. These order codes were created to eliminate duplication of tests since both the Molecular vaginitis-vaginosis panel and the STI panel include Trichomonas. The STI Panel includes C. trachomatis (CT), N. gonorrhoeae (GC), and T. vaginalis (TVAG).
