Michigan Medicine Laboratories Toxicology Laboratory will begin offering Selenium, Serum, effective March 8, 2022.  This test will replace Mayo Clinic Laboratories SES (order code SELEN).

Serum selenium levels can be used in the determination of deficiency or toxicity. Selenium deficiency can occur endemically, or as a result of sustained TPN and restricted diets in patients with no functional bowel, or because of acute inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn disease. Selenium deficiency has been associated with cardiomyopathy and may exacerbate hypothyroidism. Selenium supplementation to raise the serum concentration to above 70 ng/mL is the usual treatment, and the adequacy of supplementation is monitored on a semiannual basis. Selenium toxicity is relatively rare and is not known as a significant problem except in acute overdose cases.

Collection Instructions: Royal blue (trace element) and/or Metal-Free aliquot tubes are available from MLabs (800-862-7284). Collect blood in a royal blue top (trace element) tube with no preservative (serum). Allow specimen to clot for 30 minutes, centrifuge, and carefully pour serum into a metal-free aliquot tube, avoiding transfer of the cellular components of blood. Do not insert a pipet into the serum to transfer and do not ream the specimen with a wooden stick to assist with the transfer.  Specimens may be stored refrigerated if received by the testing laboratory within 48 hours of collection; otherwise, serum must be frozen.

Reference Range: Age 0-2 months: 45 - 90 ng/mL; age 3-6 months: 50 - 120 ng/mL; age 7-9 months:
60 - 120 ng/mL; age 10-12 months: 70 - 130 ng/mL; age >1 year: 70 - 150 ng/mL.
