MLabs will offer PCS – Proteins S & C Hypercoagulation Panel [PCS] . See below for more test information.

Collection Instructions: Collect three 2.7 mL sodium citrate tubes (blue top) of whole blood. Invert gently at the tubes at time of collection and ship the specimens to MLabs within three hours of collection. Alternatively, centrifuge the specimen and aliquot the plasma into three plastic vials and freeze within four hours of collection. Ship specimens on dry ice to MLabs.

NOTE: Collection of the blood through lines that have been previously flushed with heparin should be avoided. If the blood must be drawn through a VAD (vascular access device), the line should be flushed with 5 mL of saline and the first 5 mL of blood or six dead space volumes of the VAD discarded.

Please provide clinical history (brief description of the reason for testing, e.g., history of easy bruising and menorrhagia, family history of von Willebrand disease) and a listing of current and recent medications, including oral contraceptives, anticoagulants, and factor replacement therapy/DDAVP.

Test usage: In patients being investigated for thrombotic risk, Protein C and Protein S can be evaluated. This panel includes Activated Protein C Resistance, Protein C Activity, and Protein S Antigen (Free). Test may include pathologist interpretation of results at an additional charge, and is not indicated for patients receiving anticoagulant therapy, or immediately following an acute thrombotic event. Not included in this panel, but offered in the Thrombotic Risk Profile (PROTH), other tests to be considered as part of an evaluation for a prothrombotic state: Factor VIII Assay, Fibrinogen (clottable), Fibrinogen Antigen, Plasminogen Activity, Hexagonal Phospholipid Neutralization, and Dilute Russell's Viper Venom Test.
