Specimen Requirements

Collection Onsite

Collect specimen in stool culture transport with salmon colored cap available from Microbiology Laboratory, 2F461 University Hospital. Add stool specimen to transport until liquid reaches fill line. Emulsify specimen thoroughly in transport fluid. Specify current antibiotic therapy, and clinical diagnosis. For optimum recovery, send directly to the Microbiology Laboratory.

Collection Offsite

Collect in stool culture transport available from MLabs. Add stool specimen to transport until liquid reaches fill line. Emulsify specimen thoroughly in transport fluid. Specify fungal species suspected. For optimum recovery, send immediately. If specimen must be stored, refrigerate immediately after specimen collection. May be refrigerated up to 24 hrs. Indicate specimen source, collection date/time, current antibiotic therapy, and clinical diagnosis. If an unacceptable specimen is received, the client will be notified and another specimen will be requested before disposal of the specimen.
