Specimen Requirements
Label a clean, leakproof rigid container with patient's last name, first name and registration number (or other second unique patient identifier). Obtain expectorated sputum, NOT SALIVA OR NASAL SECRETION. Instruct patient to rinse mouth and then expectorate a DEEP COUGH specimen into container. An early morning deep cough yields the best specimen. Do not add fixative. 24-hour collections are not acceptable. Deliver immediately to Specimen Processing or to the Cytopathology Laboratory during laboratory hours. Refrigerate specimens that cannot be delivered during laboratory hours and deliver as soon as possible the following work day. Do not allow specimens to freeze.
