Enzymatic Colorimetric
Evaluation of metabolic acidosis particularly pyruvic acidosis.

Specimen Requirements
Obtain pyruvate collection tubes containing 4 mL of chilled 8% perchloric acid from Chemical Pathology Lab; keep tubes refrigerated until use. Collect and process blood sample according to procedure listed on instruction sheet accompanying collection tubes. Transport specimen to the laboratory IMMEDIATELY following collection. Do not transport Pyruvic Acid specimens via the pneumatic tube system.
Pyruvate specimens cannot be drawn at off-site blood draw stations. Onsite Michigan Medicine blood draw stations may obtain pyruvate tubes containing 4 mL of chilled 8% perchloric acid from the chemical pathology laboratory; keep tubes refrigerated until use. Collect and process blood sample according to procedure listed on instruction sheet accompanying collection tubes. Transport specimen to the laboratory IMMEDIATELY following collection. Do not transport Pyruvic Acid specimens via the pneumatic tube system.
