Test Overview
Colorimetric, Kinetic
Identifying individuals with the abnormal allele who do not rapidly hydrolize the drug succinylcholine. Some individuals with normal total pseudocholinesterase levels may be sensitive to succinylcholine.
Dibucaine Inhibition: 70 - 90%, Congenital Deficiency: 18 - 20%. Total: Males: 3100 - 6500 U/L; Females: < 18 yrs: Not established; 18-49 yrs: 1800 - 6600 U/L; > or = 50 yrs: 2550 - 6800 U/L.

Specimen Requirements
Collect specimen in a red top or SST tube. Centrifuge WITHIN 2 HOURS, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate. For cases of prolonged apnea following surgery, wait 24 hours before obtaining specimen.
