Performed by authorized providers in the point of care. The Tzanck smear is a diagnostic tool that allows for rapid detection of multinucleated giant cells that can be found in herpetic infections. Other methods, such as viral culture or PCR , may be used to confirm results.
•Too thick a preparation may obscure elements and can cause a false negative reading.
