Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)/DNA Probe Hybridization

Test Usage

An aid in the rapid diagnosis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including qualitative detection of HSV DNA in non-blood clinical specimens.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Offsite

Collect swab specimen of throat using a dacron or rayon swab with an aluminum or plastic shaft; do not use swab with calcium alginate tip or wooden shaft. Place swab in BBL CultureSwab (Stuart) or M4-RT transport media; swabs in Aerobic transport are not acceptable. Other acceptable specimens include respiratory specimens (bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, nasopharyngeal aspirate or washing, sputum, or tracheal aspirate), body fluid, or fresh tissue. Refrigerate.

From infants (age <3 months), amniotic fluid, prostatic secretions and semen. Add 1 mL of fluid to 3 mL of M5 transport media and freeze. Indicate specimen source, collection date/time, current antibiotic therapy, and clinical diagnosis
