Isolate and identify potentially pathogenic organisms.
Consult Pediatric Infectious Diseases (763-2440) or Adult Infectious Diseases (936-5205) for interpretation (call MLabs office and ask for appropriate department). Isolator tubes will not isolate anaerobes.
Preliminary results are reported in 24 hours. Negative cultures are reported in 5 days for routine blood cultures. The health care provider will be notified of initial positive smears and cultures.
Draw two Isolators, one from the catheter line to be monitored and one from a peripheral site. Mix Isolator contents well to lyse blood cells and prevent clotting. DO NOT refrigerate or incubate. For optimum recovery, send immediately or store Isolator at room temperature and transport within 4 hrs. A maximum of 3 blood cultures will be accepted within a 24 hr period. Label tube with anatomic site if more than one culture is drawn at one time. Indicate specimen source, collection date/time, current antibiotic therapy, and clinical diagnosis. If an unacceptable specimen is received, the client will be notified before disposal of the original specimen. .Specimen Collection: Clean venipuncture site with soap and water if soiled. Wipe with 70% alcohol and allow to dry. Place swab containing an iodoform solution on the venipuncture site and apply in overlapping circles working from the center to the periphery to obtain a diameter of 4 inches. Allow to dry 2 minutes before performing venipuncture. DO NOT palpate venipuncture site after preparation. If patient is sensitive to iodine, alcohol alone may be used. Draw required amount of blood into syringe and transfer to isolator tube.
Test includes quantitative colony counts to evaluate status of the catheter line. Colonies/mL from blood drawn through a catheter line (such as Broviac) are compared to colonies/mL from peripheral blood. See Blood Culture, Bacteria and Yeast for additional information on routine blood cultures. Test includes susceptibility testing of potentially pathogenic organism(s) at an additional charge unless specifically declined.
