Test Overview
Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH)
This test detects aneuploidy for chromosomes 3, 7, 17, and loss of the 9p21 locus via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens including resections, biopsies and cytology cell blocks. Positive results are consistent with a diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma; however, a positive result by this test is not specific for mesothelioma. Metastatic carcinoma may also demonstrate a positive result.

Specimen Requirements
A formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue block containing sufficient neoplastic cells is preferred. Unstained slides (3, 4-micron slides) with associated H&E stained slide are also acceptable. Decalcified tissue or other fixatives will be accepted and the assay attempted, however these may result in failed testing due to degraded nucleic acid. Both blocks and slides should be stored at room temperature.
