Test Overview
Electrophoresis
Lipoprotein electrophoresis is recommended for determining the nature of a dyslipoproteinemia when total cholesterol and triglycerides are elevated. An increased level of beta migrating particles (LDL) is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) migrate in the pre-beta region. Patients with type III hyperlipoproteinemia have increases of VLDL with abnormal migration on electrophoresis.
