Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry

Test Usage

Detecting arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead exposure and toxicity in 24-hour urine specimen.

Reference Range

ARSENIC: 0-17 years: not established, > or =18 years: <18 mcg/24 hour;
CADMIUM: 0-17 years: not established, > or =18 years: <0.6 mcg/24 hour;
MERCURY: 0-17 years: not established, > or =18 years: <2 mcg/24 hour, Toxic concentration: >50 mcg/24 hour; The concentration at which toxicity is expressed is widely variable between patients. 50 mcg/24 hour is the lowest concentration at which toxicity is usually apparent.
LEAD: 0-17 years: not established, > or =18 years: <1 mcg/24 hour.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Onsite

Collect 24 hour urine in container. Send lead reporting for with sample. Note 24 hour urine volume and collection dates/times on the request form; no preservative necessary. Collection must take place prior to or 48 hours after administering gadolinium-containing contrast media.

Collection Offsite

Collect 24 hour urine in a clean, plastic container with no metal cap or glued insert and no preservative. Aliquot urine into a clean, plastic container with no metal cap or glued insert and refrigerate within 4 hours of completion of collection. Record 24 hour urine volume and collection dates/times on the request form. Patient should not eat seafood for a 48 hour period prior to start of collection. Collection must take place prior to or 48 hours after administering gadolinium-containing contrast media. If the patient is an Ohio resident, complete the appropriate sections of the Ohio Lead Reporting Form and submit with the specimen.
