Test Usage

To assess glomerular filtration rate

Specimen Requirements

Collection Onsite

Timed urine collection; Whole blood for serum creatinine. the CRCL order contains a timed urine creatinine order and a serum creatinine order to obtain a calculated creatinine clearance. The serum creatinine should be drawn during the urine collection period. Record the length of urine collection on the requisition. Note the patient's height and weight on the requisition or in the MiChart order for accurate calculation. Cause for Rejection: Failure to receive both urine and serum creatinine samples.

Collection Offsite

Collect blood in SST tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial and refrigerate. Collect 24 hour urine specimen with no preservative. Aliquot 10 ml into a plastic urine container and refrigerate. Record total 24 hour urine volume and collection dates/times on request form. Both a 24 hr urine creatinine and a serum creatinine must be ordered to obtain a calculated clearance. The serum creatinine must be drawn during the urine collection period. Note the patient's height and weight on the requisition for accurate calculation.
