Test Overview
Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)
Screening for Cushing syndrome.
11 pm - 12 midnight: <100 ng/mL; 7 am - 9 am: 100 - 750 ng/mL; 3 pm - 5 pm: <401 ng/mL.
Acute stress (including hospitalization and surgery), alcoholism, depression, and many drugs (eg, exogenous glucocorticoids, anticonvulsants) can obliterate normal diurnal variation, affect response to suppression/stimulation tests, and cause elevated cortisol levels. Cortisol levels may be increased in pregnancy and with exogenous estrogens.
