Test Usage

Detection of nutritional deficiency as in anorexia nervosa or of excess of carotene as with food faddists; evidence of person with lipid malabsorption.

Reference Range

70 - 300 mcg/dl

Specimen Requirements

Collection Onsite

Collect blood in a red top or SST tube from a fasting patient (12 hour fast). Deliver to SP immediately or centrifuge, aliquot serum into plastic vial and freeze within 1 hour of collection. Patient should not consume any alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection of specimen. Protect specimen from light.

Collection Offsite

Collect blood in a red top or SST tube from a fasting patient (12 hour fast). Patient should not consume any alcohol for 24 hours prior to collection of specimen. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into plastic vial and freeze within 1 hour of collection. Protect specimen from light.
