Test Usage

Diagnosis and follow up of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC); adjunct to diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type II (MENII) and familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (FMTC); occasionally useful in the diagnosis and follow up of islet cell tumors.

Reference Range

Males: <18 pg/mL; Females: <12 pg/mL.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Onsite

Collect specimen in an SST or red top tube. Deliver to SP immediately or centrifuge, aliquot serum into plastic vial and freeze within 1 hour of collection.

Collection Offsite

Collect specimen in an SST or red top tube. Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial, and freeze within 1 hour of collection. Refrigerated samples are not acceptable.
