Test Limitations

Serum total bile acids testing is generally not suitable for differentiation among the various types of liver diseases.

Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions

Collect specimen in an SST or red top tube from a fasting patient (8 hour fast). Centrifuge, aliquot serum into a plastic vial within 2 hours of collection, and refrigerate.

Special Handling

Fasting specimen.

Contraindications
This test should not be ordered for patients receiving bile acid therapy.
