This test is rarely positive, and is no longer performed as a routine test. A staff physician or a member of Infectious Diseases Service must contact the laboratory with the clinical necessity for the test before the specimen will be processed. Collect specimens from the prepared site using sterile technique. AVOID CONTAMINATION WITH NORMAL FLORA FROM SKIN. Specimens with volume > 1.0 ml may be sent without transport but MUST be received within 1 hour of collection. Specimens with volume < 1.0 MUST be sent in anaerobic transport. Indicate current antibiotic therapy and clinical diagnosis.

Collect CSF after sterile preparation of aspiration site. AVOID CONTAMINATION WITH NORMAL FLORA FROM SKIN. Indicate specimen source, collection date/time, current antibiotic therapy and clinical diagnosis on requisition.
